bullet Robert M. Sanger, senior partner in the firm, is an experienced trial lawyer who has practiced in Santa Barbara since 1973.   Mr. Sanger is a Certified Criminal Law Specialist, certified by The State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.  Mr. Sanger has tried a number of high profile cases and has handled complex criminal and civil cases in the State and Federal courts throughout California and, occasionally, in other jurisdictions. 

Mr. Sanger has received recognition for his work on behalf of the public, in civil rights and criminal defense, including, the California State Bar Board of Governor's Award for Pro Bono Services, 1982; Bill of Rights Award, A.C.L.U., Santa Barbara Chapter, 1994; Santa Barbara Criminal Defense Bar Association Order of the Reasonable Doubt, 1993; Death Penalty Focus Special Achievement Award 2004. 

Mr. Sanger is listed in Naifeth and Smith, The Best Lawyers in America, and the Martindale-Hubbell, Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. He is also designated a SuperLawyer by Super Lawyers Magazine.

bullet Catherine J. Swysen, managing partner in the firm, is also an experienced trial and appellate lawyer.  She has handled major criminal and civil cases in the State and Federal courts.

Ms. Swysen's dedication to civil rights was acknowledged in 1991 when she was awarded the Beulah W. Engelsberg Award by the  A.C.L.U. .  That same year, Ms. Swysen was also recognized by the California State Senate and the California State Assembly for her civil liberties work.  In 1999, she was awarded the Order of the Reasonable Doubt by the Santa Barbara Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.

Ms. Swysen is fluent in French. 

 

bullet Stephen K. Dunkle, senior associate lawyer with the firm, handles criminal trials. He also handles criminal law and motion matters and criminal writs and appeals. Mr. Dunkle has been instrumental in a number of the firm’s successful cases, including Constitutional challenges in the appellate courts and was primarily responsible for the extensive law and motion and appellate practice in the Michael Jackson case.

 

bullet Heather E. Gibson, associate lawyer with the firm, has a background in plaintiff's civil litigation including experience in handling insurance coverage and other matters.  She also has handles the defense of civil cases, inclusding those arising out of concurrent government investigations.

 

bullet Law Clerks: Jeffrey Sanger and Julie Lawrence are working as law clerks at the firm.  They are assisting with legal research and factual development in complex litigation.

 

bullet Investigator, Charles Pavlosky, is a private investigator and is the Chief investigator for the firm.  Before joining Sanger & Swysen, Mr. Pavlosky has had extensive experience as an investigator for the office of the prosecutor in addition to many years as a private investigator in civil and criminal matters.

 

bullet Legal Assistants:  Jessica Kraft is the Senior Legal Assistant with the firm and assists Mr. Sanger on his cases.  Elisa Rodriguez is a Legal Assistant and assists Ms. Swysen on her cases and with office management matters.  Michael O'Guinn is a Legal Assistant and assists Mr. Dunkle and Ms. Gibson on their cases.  Rosie Martinez is Receptionist and Librarian, responsible for maintenance of the firm Library along with other clerical duties.
